Apprentice star to share his secrets for University of Leicester students

The University of Leicester has invited Jim ‘Jedi Jim’ Eastwood from BBC 1’s The Apprentice to give final year students a masterclass in personal impact when seeking a job.

He’ll be running an upbeat, motivational session on 7 December exclusively to Historical Studies students at the University with a focus on helping to promote themselves to prospective employers.

This year, Lord Sugar’s right hand man Nick Hewer praised Jim’s excellent sales and negotiation skills which earned him his Star Wars-inspired nickname. Jim will talk to students about how these skills are useful in everyday work life, regardless of industry sector, whether negotiating a deadline with a colleague or a deal with a customer.

This initiative is part of a wider commitment to graduate employability from the University of Leicester. The University has also created a Recruitment Boot Camp pilot to deliver skills training to final year Historical Studies students to make them as marketable as possible to employers.

The Boot Camp has been divided into three stages. The first stage is to inspire students to start to think about career options, understand the market and what it can offer and to consider how they sell themselves to employers. This will take place on the afternoon of December 7th 2011 and ‘Jedi Jim’ will share the podium with Simon Reichwald, Director of Bright Futures and expert on graduate employment.

The second stage will include practical skills sessions around applying for roles and preparing for assessment centres. The final stage will be a full simulated assessment centre for all students, in small groups over the course of a week.

Stuart Johnson, Acting Head of Careers, said “We are always looking for new ways to inspire students about their career choices and strategies to give them a competitive edge. Jim Eastwood is a fun and motivational speaker and he’ll talk to our students about personal impact and selling yourself. We’re delighted Jim can support the event.”
