Terry Farrell and Partners have teamed up with Buro Happold to produce a masterplan for the University of Leicester that will allow the University to enhance standards of campus environment and sustainability.

Issued by Farells on 19 August 2011

The Farrells team will also advise the University of Leicester on their forward strategic planning, looking at how the aspirations of the university can be accommodated in and around its central City Campus.

Farrells’ process will seek to enable the University’s aims to grow student numbers and achieve a sustainable, energy efficient campus environment. Initially, a detailed college by college space and usage analysis will result in strategic proposals for achievable increases in the efficiency of space use on campus, with potential solutions ranging from changes in timetabling to new forms of accommodation. Using the results of this analysis, Farrells will then look at transforming the public realm of the campus. The project will be led by Farrells Partner Neil Bennett, an expert in the higher education sector who has previously led masterplanning projects for many universities including Oxford, Dundee and Manchester. Neil says of the project:

“The University of Leicester has already achieved a remarkable degree of growth and development, making it one of Britain’s most dynamic universities. Farrells big picture thinking work with the University on the masterplan is an opportunity for the University of Leicester to reflect, assess and plan its future options in a period of dramatic uncertainty for the Higher Education sector.

The University has also recognised the importance of the spaces between buildings, and the value of creating attractive places and environments - from bus stop to seminar room door”

The University have set a high bar for carbon savings and sustainability. Accordingly, Farrells invited Buro Happold into the project by for their expertise in environmental engineering. Buro Happold will analyse the environmental performance and regulatory compliance of the existing building stock, enabling Farrells to ensure that sustainable principles form the basis of the masterplan strategy.

Paul Goffin, Director of Estates, said: “The University of Leicester announced its £1 billion Development Framework Plan in 2008 and since then £52 million has been invested in new projects as well as improvements and major maintenance of the University’s estate.  This masterplan will detail future developments that will enhance the University’s academic and social spaces in order to optimise the use of the campus for the benefit of staff, students and visitors.

“The University is delighted to be working with internationally renowned companies in order to help it to realise its ambitions.  Investment in our infrastructure is key to enhancing our world-class reputation and attracting the best staff and students.”

Farrells will deliver their masterplan in late summer following an in-depth consultation process throughout the University and wider city region.
