The Performance Development Discussion

The Performance Development Discussion (PDD) provides the opportunity for all members of staff to have a formal, structured and productive conversation with a manager/appraiser about their performance and development needs. This conversation will be supported by the more informal discussions during the year.

Professional Development DiscussionThe PDD gives time for reflection, reviewing progress against previously set objectives, celebrating successes and sharing feedback on the previous year. It then gives all colleagues the opportunity to look forward, to set objectives for the following year in line with the University strategy, to maximise areas of strength and talent, to identify areas of development to achieve these objectives and to plan any support and development for any future career aspirations.

The purpose of PDD is to set clear and realistic expectations for all members of staff through good quality and regular conversations, to encourage all colleagues to develop both their existing skills and their potential and to address any issues that prevents them from maximising their performance. This process will identify clearly the contributions colleagues make and how they and the University will work together to continue to develop their expertise in teaching, research, professional services specialisms, enterprise and leadership, thus enabling successful achievement of goals and assisting in the fulfilment of career aspirations.

All colleagues must complete form A to support and record their PDD. Form B may be used for recording academic activity in more detail and is entirely optional for PDD.
