Writing for the Web

Course description

Really illuminating. Gave practical advice for real changes you can make, not just food for thought."

This course will help you

  • Understand the difference between writing for the web and writing for print
  • Appreciate the need for consistency and being familiar with the University house style
  • Become familiar with the structure of a web page
  • Understand how to adapt printed text for use on the web

The Digital Communications Team are developing a new course which replaces this one in due course.  Please refer to the Writing for the Web section on the Web Centre pages in the interim.

What can I expect to cover?

The course looks at the many differences between a website and a print document, even when they convey the same information. We will look at how and why people use the web and how this influences the best way to write for it – and why this is important. Working from a practical example, we will then apply what we have learned to some sample text.

What will I get out of this course?
This will really help me to adapt my websites to be more user friendly.  Excellent balance of information and practical exercises."

You will have an understanding of why good web writing matters, which you can apply to your own work and also demonstrate to colleagues. You will learn some simple tricks to turn print copy into web copy and some pitfalls to avoid. Applied to your own website, this will provide a better experience for your site users.

Who is it for?

A course designed for staff that will be maintaining or creating departmental or personal web pages.
