Overview

THIS TWO PART COURSE is aimed at any member of staff who has team management responsibility (unless it has been identified and agreed as part of PDD development that it would be beneficial for you to attend this course).

The course gives an overview of the University’s Ordinances, Policies and Procedures and your role and responsibilities and those of HR, as well as providing an opportunity for you to explore and practice practical approaches and techniques when managing conduct, conflict and performance issues that may arise with your staff. The course will look at both informal options for resolving issues, as well as the need to escalate to formal processes using relevant University Ordinances.


Delegates are REQUIRED to complete Part 1 a Blackboard online course,
Part 1: An Introduction to Managing Performance, Conduct and Conflict at Work

BEFORE
they attend Part 2
, a practical workshop which will give you the opportunity to develop and practice key skills in a supportive learning environment (see link below how to access Blackboard and self-enrol.)

Part 2 of the course (the practical workshop) is available in two versions, one aimed at Academic and Research staff, the other aimed at Professional services and Corporate services staff.

What can I expect to cover?

The online course and practical workshop will cover areas including:

  • Case Studies and Practice Scenarios
What will I get out of this course?

The workshop will aim to demonstrate to managers how issues which arise within their team can be resolved informally where possible, and how to approach formal procedures where it has not been possible to achieve an earlier informal resolution. You will have an opportunity to develop and practice skills in having challenging conversations with staff and to discuss with fellow delegates how you might go about managing and resolving a challenging staffing situation.

Who is it for?

Staff with team management responsibilities. For staff who do not manage a team, they may attend where it has been identified with their manager as part of the PDD discussion that attendance would be beneficial for development purposes.

Participant preparation needed?

You should complete the Part 1 course on Blackboard before attending the workshop session. The Blackboard course should take you approximately 40-60 minutes to complete.

Please come to the workshop prepared with some (anonymised) examples of staffing issues where you wish to discuss these as part of a group and to share experiences.

To join the on-line course, log-in to Blackboard and self-enrol.  You will need to click on the link Part 1: An Introduction to Managing Performance, Conduct and Conflict at Work, and then click '+Enrol' to the left side of the screen.

Additional Information

This course has been designed by the HR Advisory Team to equip managers with the skills to deal with a wide range of people management issues.  Each workshop session will be delivered by a Senior HR Adviser who will share with you their experience and advice, as well as giving you the opportunity to share your own experiences with fellow managers and colleagues.
