Supporting Learning in Higher Education (Level 7: 30 credits)

Supporting Learning in Higher Education is a postgraduate course (worth 30 credits) to enable University of Leicester part-time tutors, who are relatively inexperienced in teaching and/or supporting learning, to engage in initial professional development to achieve Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (HEA).

On successful completion of the course, participants should be able to:

  1. Contribute to the enhancement of student learning through the critical evaluation and application of effective teaching and/or feedback strategies;
  2. Integrate pedagogic scholarship into their practice;
  3. Assess their professional development needs and address these in a systematic and efficient manner;
  4. Demonstrate how their practice aligns to Descriptor 1 of the UK Professional Standards Framework.

Typical entry requirements:

The course is for part-time tutors including research staff, demonstrators and staff working in the Professional Services who contribute to teaching/supporting student learning for 20 hours or more per academic year.


Part-time tutors that are registered as PhD students cannot also be registered for this course.

    • Learning Outcomes and Curriculum alignment

Duration of the programme: Two semesters. This programme recruits twice a year and starts in September and January.

Participants will be able to have this certified professional learning accredited towards the Postgraduate Certificate in Academic and Professional Practice if their teaching/learning support role is increased to encompass all the Areas of Activity of the UK Professional Standards Framework. Subject to University Regulations, this certified learning can be accredited when their career develops.
