Curriculum transformation

Over the next two academic years we will be working together to introduce a number of important initiatives: to bring our courses and overall curriculum in line with sector standards, and to reinvigorate the way courses are delivered to provide a modern flexible offer to prospective students. More information can be found via the Quality Office (Log in required).

Module Changes

1. The standardisation of credit hours, moving from 7.5 to 10 hours per credit. This will be achieved:

  • for all year 1 and 2 UG modules by 2017/18
  • for all year 3 and 4 UG modules by 2018/19 and 2019/20 respectively
  • in 2017/18 only, through a mix of increasing independent & guided study time and capturing existing contact time more accurately

2. The harmonisation of module credits to be 15 or 30 credits:

  • for years 1 and 2 of UG programmes in 2018/19
  • for years 3 and 4 of UG programmes in 2019/20 and 2020/21 respectively

The introduction of UG Pathways (starting from 2016/17): offering three ways to study at undergraduate level:

  • Single Honours (a single programme, in one subject area);
  • Joint Honours (a single programme, in two coherently related areas, usually with a 50:50 balance);
  • Major/Minor Honours (two programmes, in two different subject areas, with a 75:25 proportion)

The reshaping of the academic year (by 2017/18)

An initial induction week, followed by two terms of 11 weeks, a 3 (rather than 4) week vacation at Christmas and a 4 (rather than 5) week vacation at Easter; a resit period in late July / early August.
