Westlaw UK is a one of the key legal research databases – used in both academic and professional practice.  It includes full-text legislation, law reports, and commentary from journals and encyclopaedias.  This is a 1 hour practical workshop which gives participants an opportunity to take the Westlaw UK user certification test, in a supported learning environment, and receive a Westlaw UK User Certificate.

Participants are required to answer 10 multiple choice question in one hour, and successful completion is rewarded with a Westlaw UK User Certificate, which can be used on CVs as evidence of legal research skills.

Who is this workshop for?

Primarily undergraduate law students, but also relevant to postgraduate law students and researchers, who are not otherwise familiar with Westlaw UK database.

What will it cover?

There will be a brief demonstration of Westlaw UK, with an opportunity to ask questions; but the majority of the session will be spent taking the user certification test.  You are expected to complete online database training before the workshop (see below).  The test will assess your ability to use Westlaw UK: to find definitions and commentary of the law on a subject, to find journal articles, to find cases and legislation by name and citation, and to analyse the status of cases and legislation.

Do I need to do anything to prepare?

  • Yes - you must sign-up in advance (places are limited)
  • Yes - you must watch the Westlaw UK training videos (parts 1-3) (40 minutes) before the workshop.  Please note, these videos currently work in Internet Explorer only.
