What's New - July 2017

Blackboard was upgraded between the 11 July 2017 and 12 July 2017. The new version looks quite different and has some useful new features, but the way you use Blackboard is mostly the same.

Logging in

If you are using a University computer on campus, then you no longer have to login to Blackboard. When you click on the 'Blackboard' link on the University website, you will be logged in automatically. If you have problems accessing Blackboard, close all browser windows and try again. If it still doesn't work, you may need to clear your browsing history.

However if you are off-campus, or on campus but using Eduroam, then you will still have to login. The login screen will look different but you will still login with your IT account username and password in the same way as previously.

Appearance

Blackboard looks quite different and you will notice that the list of courses is on the left of the screen instead of the right. This new version works much better in the browser on mobile phones and tablets.

New home page

Within course sites the icons look different and the Cancel and Submit buttons will always be visible at the bottom of the page, even on phones and tablets. The 'button' style left-hand menus do not work well in the new version, so these have been replaced by 'text' menus.

Uploading files

When creating an item or web link, you can drag and drop files into a 'hot spot' in the Attach Files area.

Attach files

Within the text editor there is an extra option in the list of Mashups that enables you to add files from Dropbox.

Assessment

There are some small changes to Blackboard assignments and the Grade Centre.

  • When students submit work to a Blackboard assignment, a submission receipt will be generated to confirm the date, time and file submitted.
  • Instructors can send reminders from Grade Centre columns to students who have not submitted their work.
  • A new filter is available in the Needs Marking screen in the Grade Centre to show or hide attempts that are not included in the calculation of the final grade.
  • There are some improvements to the Self and Peer Assessment to exclude students who haven't submitted from the evaluation phase.

Reports

The Course Activity Overview report will be updated to enable Instructors to filter the report by course groups, to improve the experience for larger courses.

Collaborate Ultra

There is a new version of the online teaching tool Collaborate Ultra with more features.
