How do I create shortcuts to programs in Windows 10?

Creating shortcuts to programs

To create a shortcut that will appear on your desktop.

  • Open the Start Menu and locate the program you wish to create a shortcut for and drag and drop it onto your desktop.

Creating shortcuts to a file

To create a shortcut to a specific file on your desktop.

  1. Open File Explorer
    File Explorer Icon
  2. Locate your file, right click it and choose Send to > Desktop (create shortcut)

Pin Programs to the Start Menu and Taskbar

You can pin your favourite programs to the Start Menu and to the Taskbar at the bottom of the screen.

By default This PC, Microsoft Edge and the Software Center will be pinned to the Start Menu in the ‘This Computer’ group.

To pin programs to the Start Menu:

  1. Open the Start Menu, right click on the desired program and choose Pin to Start

  2. This will pin Tiles to the Start Menu which can then be freely moved, resized and grouped

To pin programs to the Taskbar:

  1. Open the Start Menu, right click on the desired program, select the More > option and choose Pin to taskbar
