New IT account security improvements

We are introducing improvements with a focus on how you login to University services. This is particularly important at this time, with many staff working remotely and current attacks on systems.

As many University IT accounts have access to sensitive student, research and University information, with your help, we need to do everything we can to keep this information secure.

This is a continuation of Office 365 improvements introduced in January 2019.

What are the benefits?

In the next few weeks, a number of improvements will be made available, for protecting your University IT account:

  • The login page change (Tuesday, 26 May 2020) will:
    • enable access to selected services for those without a University IT account e.g. prospective students will be able to access Blackboard as part of student enrolment
    • improve user experience as you login
    • ensure fewer redirections as you login to our services
    • improved security and analytics enabling us to provide even better protection for IT accounts
    • Remove reliance on University datacentres to login to externally hosted services
  • A new Self Service Password Reset solution will:
    • Help you to reset your password whilst working remotely
    • Allow you to reset your password from the login screen of a University PC
    • Enable you to unlock your own University IT account
  • Introduce the ability to protect your IT account using Two Factor Authentication (2FA)
