Printer and printer consumables

What are the key things to know?

Smart Printer allocation

  • Smart Printers are paid for centrally and every building is provided with a ‘Smart Printing Spine’, designed to provide access to print, copy and scan facilities for all staff based in that building.
  • For everyday printing needs, all staff should have access to black & white A4 print facilities within a reasonable walking distance of their base of work.
  • Colour printing facilities are provided but at lower density than black & white facilities. This is to achieve the right balance between meeting the needs of users to print in colour; while ensuring that colour is only used where it is necessary and not for casual purposes.
  • In larger buildings (or otherwise given an exceptional business case), at least one A3 colour Smart Printer is provided.
  • For changes to the Smart Printing provision in your building speak to your Smart Printing superuser, who will liaise with IT Services

Single function printers

  • Single function printers are printers not connected to the University network, and are provided where provision of a Smart Printer is not possible or adequate. These are purchased centrally, supported by college IT managers.
  • Where a new single-function device is needed, IT Services will specify a suitable single-function HP device based on your requirements.

Printer consumables

  • All requests for printers and printer consumables should be made to the  IT Service Desk.
  • A buffer stock of the most common consumables for HP printers is held by IT Services to allow for quick replenishment of supplies where necessary.
  • All HP consumables are purchased through the managed print contract held with DTP. Other consumables are purchased from an appropriate Smarter Purchasing catalogue supplier based on the make/model of printer.
