Windows 7 support is ending very soon

Over 8500 University PCs have now been upgraded to Windows 10. With Microsoft ending support for Windows 7 in January 2020, Windows 7 PCs will be removed from the University network, beginning with those that are not in use.

What

As Microsoft support for Windows 7 ends on Thursday, 14 January 2020, it will be unacceptable to allow University PCs on this operating system to connect to the University network, as they will no longer receive security updates.

The last date that a University PC running Windows 7 can be used will be Friday, 10 January 2020. From that date, all Windows 7 PCs will be permanently removed from the University network and IT infrastructure that supports Windows 7 PCs will be turned off.

Unused PCs to be disconnected from the University network initially

Leading up to that date, PCs that have not been used for defined periods, will be disabled from accessing the University network.

From Monday, 18 November 2019, any Windows 7 PC that has not be used for 90 days will not be able to access the University network - you will no longer be able to login or use this PC.

While it will be possible to re-enable network access to an unused Windows 7 PC, this will only be possible when an agreed plan is in place to upgrade the PC to Windows 10 or retire the computer.

We expect to announce further dates for when PCs will be disconnected from the University network and may include PCs that have not be turned on for 60 or 30 days.

What do I need to do?

  • If you have already been in contact about your Windows 10 upgrade, but require software, you don't need to contact us. Instead, we'll contact you to make arrangements to upgrade your PC.
  • If you use a Windows 7 University PC from 18 November 2019, you may find it doesn’t work. This may be because the PC has been disconnected from the University network. Contact the IT Service Desk to report this issue, indicating where the PC is located and any other information, which will aid planning to upgrade it to Windows 10 or retire it.

When

Monday, 18 November 2019 Any Windows 7 PC that has not be used for 90 days will be disconnected from the University network
Friday, 10 January 2020 IT infrastructure that supports Windows 7 will be decommissioned. Any remaining Windows 7 PC will be permanently unable to login
