Pending price increases affecting PC and laptop purchases

The University's PC and laptop supplier, HP Inc, has made us aware of an expected 5 - 7% price increase from 1 April 2019.

Changes in foreign exchange rates and uncertainty over the UK leaving the EU have seen an official notification from HP Inc. of this price rise.

While the majority of staff will have their primary computing devices supplied to them from central funds, staff and departments who intend to purchase additional devices from departmental or research funds, should consider whether they want to take advantage of this advanced notice and place their orders before the price increase.

You may also be aware of a global shortage of Intel processors reported in the national press. The constraint on supplies has continued and this situation is likely to persist for several more months. This is now beginning to have an impact on the manufacture and delivery of PCs and laptops purchased by us.

The advice from our suppliers is that the University should ensure that all orders for PCs and laptops be placed by Easter 2019 so that delivery can be made before the end of the financial year, 31 July 2019. Given the advisory issued by HP regarding the imminent price increase, departments may want to consider their spend on equipment by the 26 March 2019 deadline to avoid additional costs.

IT Services will continue to work closely with our supplier, HP, to ensure that delays to deliveries are minimised.

What do I need to do?

If you need to order a PC or laptop in advance of the expected price increase, you will need to submit a completed New PC or Laptop request form before close of business on Tuesday 26 March 2019.
