University network upgrade – October 2017-March 2018

Improvements are being made to the University network through a joint project between IT Services and Estates to sustain its long term performance and reliability. During the work there will be some disruption and noise whilst new cabling is installed inside and between buildings on campus, at Brookfield and Nixon Court.

IT Services and Estates will collaborate on a five month project to replace the fibre optic cabling, used to connect the buildings around campus, at Brookfield and Nixon Court.

This investment in the new infrastructure is in recognition of the University’s growing reliance on IT and part of fulfilling our vision to become more digital. Additionally, replacing old cabling will reduce the risk of future IT disruption and ensure all buildings have a reliable connection to the network for the long-term.

Installation of the replacement cabling will take place during the following months. Where possible, noisy works will be planned to take place between 7am and 9am.

In buildings, cables will be run through service areas and corridors to avoid disruption to teaching. Cabling will also be installed between buildings, which may include excavation of roads, pavements, grass and planted areas.
