China - Wujia

Wujia ZhengWujia travelled from China to the UK to study BA Financial Economics at Leicester.

How did you discover the University of Leicester?

I decided I wanted to study abroad in the UK when I was in high school, so started researching universities around the UK online. Like many students, I looked at university rankings, such as QS World University Ranking and the National Student Survey. I found that the University of Leicester is rated highly on these rankings.

After that I considered the location and environment. Leicester is located in the centre of England, making it very convenient to travel to other places in the UK. It’s a beautiful, clean and quiet place to live with great shopping as well.

How easy was the application process?

The application process is not as difficult as I thought. You can submit all the required documents online and staff at the University were able to answer my questions by email. This made it quite easy for me to complete my application.

Did you find it easy to adjust to living in Leicester?

I had never travelled alone so far in my life so I was quite worried when I arrived at Leicester. But I attended lots of activities during International Welcome Week and there are lots of societies and associations at the University to join and meet people with similar interests.

I joined the Dance Society in my first year which gave me a chance to make friends with people from many different countries. I also joined the Chinese Students and Scholars Society which helped me a lot and I also did some volunteering during my free time. All these things made me very happy and I did enjoy of them.

What are the best things about living and studying at Leicester?

The most important thing about living in Leicester is the good friends I have met here. We studied together, played together, organised activities together and never felt lonely. My personal tutor was also very supportive, meaning I would not hesitate to ask her for help with any problems I faced.

In my third year I was elected as President of the Chinese Students and Scholars Society. During my term of office, I held a Mahjong Race and a Sing Race for all students and a weekly activity called “Chinese Corner” to teach Chinese and traditional Chinese culture.
