China - Lei

China - LeiLei travelled from China to the UK to study Software Engineering for Financial Services MSc at Leicester.

How did you discover the University of Leicester?

I joined in the Study Abroad programme in Xidian University (China) and the partner university is the University of Leicester. This programme allows me to spend three years in Xidian Universtiy (China) and one year in Leicester University (UK) for my Bachelor’s degree and one more year at Leicester University for my Master’s degree.

How easy was the application process?

When applying for my Master’s programme, I just followed the process on the official University website and submitted all the relevant documents. The application process was not difficult as the University website has detailed instructions.

Did you find it easy to adjust to living in Leicester?

I signed up to the peer mentor scheme and was assigned a buddy, named Victoria, who was a senior local student. We wrote emails to each other before I came to Leicester, and when I arrived she introduced me to different places and was able to answer my questions.  We often had movie nights and hung out together and became good friends.

I actually came to Leicester one week before the start of the course for the International Welcome Week, which helps you to be familiar with life and study in Leicester.

There are lots of opportunities to meet other international students and get involved in social activities. For example, there are different student societies, scheduled volunteering programmes and so forth.

Adjusting to my new life was not as difficult as I thought.

What are the best things about living and studying at Leicester?

Leicester is a nice city. People here are very friendly and helpful. I like the library most. It is very modern and I spent my memorable moments there.

When you're not studying, what do you enjoy doing in your free time at Leicester?

In my free time, I usually go to the University gym, cook dishes and hang out with my friends.

What advice would you give to anyone thinking about studying at Leicester?

Try to balance life and study when you are at Leicester as there are lots of things that you can explore.
