European Summer School

Travel to Europe this summer!

We are happy to work with our European partner universities to offer the opportunity to study either a subject or a foreign language at their university during the summer, usually between June - September.

What are the European Summer Schools?

European Summer Schools vary between 2-8 weeks in length and usually occur between June and September.

They are run by partner universities in Europe and give you the opportunity to:

  • Meet and make friends with international students with a variety of backgrounds.
  • Improve language skills and/or learn more about a specific topic or culture.
  • Enhance your CV by adding an international experience.
  • Take part in social activities and trips in a foreign country.
  • Receive expert tuition from teachers from university language departments.
  • Obtain an official language certification.

How to apply to an European Summer School

  1. Go to the European Partner Information Table and note which programmes interest you the most.
  2. Complete the Expression of Interest form.
  3. The Erasmus+ Team will provide information on how to apply.

Regensburg, Germany

The experience as a whole was amazing. I met so many different people...as the course progressed I became slightly more and more confident, from the way I asked for help to how I reacted when we began to speak and practise the Dutch skills which we had learnt in small groups
Lucy, University of Rotterdam, 2017
The summer programme was extremely beneficial to me, not only in developing my understanding of the German language but also in enabling me to settle into life in Germany, make friends and travel
Charlotte, Intensive Language Course, University of Regensburg, 2017

Is there any funding available?

Information regarding any scholarship schemes for 2019 will be provided soon. Additionally, some universities offer discounts if you are taking an Erasmus+ Year Abroad at their university.

Scholarships are limited and awarded competitively upon application.

New: Travel Bursaries for Summer Schools

The New Horizons Award Scheme, introduced in 2018, has been established to provide travel bursaries for students from disadvantaged backgrounds, to enable them to access overseas experience that may not otherwise be available to them. Please see here for details.

If you do not meet the criteria for a scholarship, but are still interested, you are more than welcome to still take part in an European Summer School.
