How do I apply?

1. Speak to your department about your options (in your first year): If you are interested in spending a year (or a semester) at one of our European partner universities, you need to apply to your academic department at Leicester. Contact your Erasmus Departmental Coordinator. They will be able to confirm if your degree pathway permits the exchange, and advise on academic suitability.

2. Do some personal research into different destinations: Check the 'where can I go?' webpages for destinations and research the partner universities, read previous students' blogs or speak with ULEES students for firsthand accounts. Once you have a good idea of where you would like to go, look into things including the cost of living and learning a language.

3. Communicate your preference to your Departmental Erasmus Coordinator: Once you are confident that you would like to participate, please contact your departmental coordinator for the Erasmus programme.

4. Your department will then allocate students to destinations in conjunction with the International Office: If your department decides to nominate you, they will pass your information to the Erasmus Team, typically in December of your second year. Decisions are made by the department, academic merit may be considered. Many departments have academic conditions which must be met by their nominated students, should the student fail to satisfy these conditions, the department may withdraw their nomination of the student at any point up to departure.

5. The Erasmus Team will then contact you about your allocation: After your nomination by your department, we will contact you with an allocated place. You may then choose to accept or decline the place. It is important that you carefully consider your allocation, as we cannot guarantee another offer should you decide to decline the offer.

6. The Erasmus Team will contact you about preparing to study abroad and the requirements for the Erasmus Grant: Once you accept your offer you will be contacted by the Erasmus team to attend mandatory pre-departure sessions. We will provide guidance on how to apply to your host university, the Erasmus grant funding, health and safety, and general country advise. We can advise where you should seek advice for everything from finance to visas (if applicable). You will also be required to complete and submit a Travel Preparation Checklist prior to your departure. You can find the checklist and associated guidance notes here.

7. Before you go: You will be expected to apply to the host university independently, arrange your own financial accounts, complete all paperwork for the Erasmus grant, obtain the necessary visas, vaccinations and additional insurance, and other preparations as applicable. You must also complete the University of Leicester's insurance questionnaire with your flight details. We advise students not to purchase flights until they have been accepted by the exchange university. If you have any questions about preparations please contact us by phone, email, or visiting the office. It is ultimately your responsibility to ensure that you are fully prepared before you depart.

8. Enjoy your studies! We hope that you enjoy your time in Europe, should you require guidance or support at any point during your travels please contact our office at
