How to Apply

Exchange students: all students joining us on exchange from partner universities should be nominated before starting the online application. Please see 'Nominations' section below for details.

Richard III statueThere are two pathways to apply, as an exchange student from a partner university, or as a direct fee-paying applicant. You must be nominated by your home university in order to be considered as an exchange student.

Our application is online for both exchange and fee paying applicants. It is made up of two parts:

  1. Online Application Form
  2. Module Indication Form

Both parts must be completed for us to accept your application. Guidance can be found below.

Dates and deadlines

Fall Semester 2018 and Academic Year 2018/19

  • 31st May 2018 application deadline for Semester 1/ September 2018 entry
  • Once you have submitted your application in full we will contact you by email. After you receive your study offer letter you will be able to request a room in University of Leicester managed accommodation.

Spring Semester 2019

  • Information on this webpage will be updated in July 2018

Nominations for exchange

Advisers should nominate their students to before students begin the online application portal.

Advisers from exchange partner universities are welcome to begin sending nominations to the Study Abroad team by email (  To nominate a student for exchange we ask that you include the following information for each student: full name, university email address, exchange request indication (Fall/ Spring/ Year).

Completing your application

Stage1 Contact the Study Abroad Office at your home university. They will be able to confirm if you are eligible for an exchange or a fee paying partner institution price. You must be nominated by your home university.
Stage 2

Decide which programme you will apply for (exchange or fee-paying). Please see Programmes for more information on which to choose.

Stage 3

Complete the Online Application Form

You must first complete the online application form. This form will ask you to provide your personal information, previous qualifications and home university.

You must also upload the following documents:
  • Current university transcript (minimum GPA 3.0).
  • Copy of the photo-id page of your passport.
  • If English is not your first language, please provide evidence of your proficiency in English with an overall IELTS score of 6.0 - 7.0 (depending on course) or TOEFL iBT 80 -100.

Please note that if you require a Tier 4 Visa to study in the UK you will need to obtain at least a 5.5 in reading, writing, listening and speaking in IELTS (or equivalent).

Stage 4

Complete the Module Indication Form

You must then complete our online module survey to indicate from which academic department you wish to select classes (called modules at Leicester).

Students will be contacted following their initial application during the window of module registration, when specific modules can be requested.

It is your responsibility to ensure that credits gained at Leicester will transfer and count towards your degree.

Please note: Courses are subject to prerequisites and availability. Time table clashes may occur.

Once your application has been submitted

  • Once we receive applications (including both the online application form and the module indication form), conditional and unconditional offers will be sent by email. Please note that responses may be sent after the application deadline has passed.

  • You will receive a link to the Joining Instructions pdf booklet.

  • Read your Joining Instructions carefully and book the Airport Bus Service, accommodation and optional study tours by the deadlines.

  • Class lists and module selections: each year we update our 'Courses' webpage with a list of available classes, or modules, for selection. You will be contacted by the Study Abroad team to select your preferred classes following your acceptance. Choices will be subject to departmental approval and availability.
