Computer Misuse Act 1990

Anyone who works with electronic data or information is liable to comply with this legislation. This includes nearly all University staff and students.
The Computer Misuse Act 1990 establishes three offences and associated punishments

The offences and current punishments are:

Unauthorised access to a computer Up to 2 year prison sentence and £5000 fine.
Unauthorised access to a computer in order to commit another offence Up to 10 year prison sentence and unlimited fine.
Unauthorised modification to the contents of a computer, or providing the tools in order to do so Up to 10 year prison sentence and unlimited fine.
