Adoption Leave


The University is committed to promoting equality and diversity by providing a supportive environment for staff who wish to integrate their working life, including the development of a career, with family responsibilities.

The non-contractual Adoption Leave Policy and Procedure apply to eligible University staff, including those in same sex relationships, who have a statutory right to Adoption Leave and Pay.

Members of staff who are taking Adoption leave may also be eligible to opt into the Shared Parental Leave and Pay system, where a child is placed for adoption on or after 5 April 2015.  If you want to learn more about shared parental leave entitlements, we run regular maternity and shared parental leave workshops (which can be booked via the Leicester Learning Institute).  You can choose to attend just the second part of the workshop, which covers Shared Parental Leave.  Alternatively, if you are adopting and would like more information about Adoption Leave and Shared Parental Leave, please contact HR.

Foster to Adopt: new right to adoption leave and pay

If you are a local authority foster parent who is also approved as a prospective adopter, and a child is placed with you in a ‘foster to adopt’ placement, you may be eligible for adoption leave and pay from when the child comes to live with you.  This right applies for members of staff who are notified of the decision to place the child with them on or after 5 April 2015.  For further information, please contact HR.
