Work Experience and Internships

For those wishing to gain experience in press and public relations, journalism or a communications role, the Press Office has two routes available to help you get a headstart in your career.

Work Experience

Work experience opportunities are available at the Press Office to any post-18 individuals with a demonstrable interest in media relations (e.g. studying a related subject at degree level, prior work experience in professional or non professional media).

We receive requests for work experience on a very regular basis, so opportunities are dependent upon the workload of the office and available space. The most ideal period is during the summer months between the academic years but always check with us well in advance to make sure that we can accommodate you.

For more information, please contact Alex Phillimore in the News Centre via

Blackboard Course

The Press Office has a Blackboard course that includes information and practical tasks to help you:

  • write press releases and news blogs and identify news angles;
  • deal with the media and learn what journalists are looking for;
  • distribute press releases and monitor press coverage;
  • conduct interviews and record podcasts;
  • write features and sharpen your writing skills;
  • use databases to identify experts and learn how academics can raise their media profile

This is a useful resource for any work experience student interested in working in the Press Office.

The course is called 'Press Office Training' and you can self-enrol.
