Using photographs on websites

When using photographs on University websites you should always consider the University's house style for photography. The aim of which is to establish a style of photography that represents the University effectively and maintains a high level of quality and consistency.

General photography guidelines

We use photography that centres around university life and people. Our photography style is candid, authentic, reportage, capturing everyday student life in a modern university environment. The images should be bright and crisp, using natural colours where possible. Photographs should be simple yet creative and interesting without feeling posed.

Section 5 of the Visual Identity Quick Guide to printed material and photography (PDF) covers the following topics and provides examples for each.

Photography for course pages

Course pages are some of the most high profile pages on the University's website and are often the first point of contact that prospective students have with the University. For this reason the photography must be of the highest standard and will need to be approved by the Marketing Communications team in the Division of External Relations.

Photographs on course pages must:

  • be professionally photographed (correct lighting, exposure, composition etc.),
  • be authentic (no abstract or stock photography),
  • show prospective students what they can expect from the course (e.g. teaching and learning environments, facilities, field trips etc.),
  • be able to be cropped effectively to fit the necessary dimensions,
  • not be a composite of multiple photographs.

Commissioning photography

If you need to commission photography for your department then please contact your college Marketing Manager in the first instance.
