Volunteer at our Leicester Heroes Events

We are looking for staff and student volunteers to help at our donor Recruitment Event for the Anthony Nolan Stem Cell Register on Monday 30 October 2017.

Volunteer now

Our sign-up period has now ended, but we would still be grateful for any additional help on the day. If you would like to volunteer, please report to the marquee at 8.30am on Monday 30 October, or 12.00 midday for the afternoon shift, and we will allocate roles and provide some training for you on the day.

If you are a member of staff and would like to be a volunteer at one of our Leicester Heroes Events, please first get the permission of your line manager or relevant departmental staff.

Thank you. Your support will help save lives.

Before the event, you will receive training and on the day of the event, you will be supported by staff from the Rik Basra Leukaemia Campaign.

We have three types of volunteer positions available so please read through the role descriptions below and decide which would most suit you. We cannot guarantee that you will definitely be matched with the role that you choose but we will endeavour to do so. We need volunteers to help us between 8.30am and 4.30pm. Various shifts are available. If you work for the full day, you will receive a £5 lunch voucher to use on the University campus.

Job 1 - Meet and Greet

You will encourage passers-by to engage with the recruitment drive and welcome potential donors. You will check eligibility criteria and educate potential donors to ensure they are making an informed choice about joining the register before guiding them towards the form-filling team.

  • Skills required: Confident, friendly manner and the ability to chat to anyone.

Job 2 - Swab Flagging and Form Filling

You will label the swabs, direct applicants to correctly take their swabs and help fill in the Anthony Nolan registration form accurately. You will answer any queries they may have about the process.

  • Skills required: Meticulous eye for detail and a friendly personality.

Job 3 - Swab Processing

Once the potential donor's registration form has been checked, you will be responsible for checking that the swabs received belong to the applicant, and that they are packed and labelled correctly. You will barcode and collate the completed registration forms and swab samples. You will also thank the potential donor for joining the register and advise them of the next steps.

  • Skills required: Patient, calm manner and a meticulous eye for detail.
