Volunteer at our Leicester Heroes Events

We are looking for staff and student volunteers to help at our donor Recruitment Event for the Anthony Nolan Stem Cell Register on Monday 30 October 2017.

We are also looking for volunteers to help at our partner events in local schools and colleges, as follows.  All college events run from 8.30am - 3.00pm

  1. Regent College, Leicester - Wednesday 11 October
  2. Robert Smyth Academy, Market Harborough- Thursday 12 October
  3. Beauchamp College, Oadby - Tuesday 24 October
  4. Gateway College, Hamilton - Wednesday 25 October
  5. Wyggeston & Queen Elizabeth 1 College, Leicester - Thursday 26 October

In collaboration with the Rik Basra Leukaemia Campaign and Leicester Marrow, we are hosting a recruitment drive on Monday 30 October 2017 at the University of Leicester to encourage people to sign up to the Anthony Nolan Stem Cell register. We are also supporting several partner events in local schools and colleges across Leicestershire on various dates. Every person on the Anthony Nolan register could save the life of someone with blood cancer. The more people who join, the more lives we can save. To make these events a success and to ensure that we can sign up as many people as possible, we need your help. We are looking for volunteers from all parts of the University; operational, management, administration, teaching, research and technical staff are all encouraged to apply and, of course, we want the support of our students.

Before the event, you will receive training and on the day of the event, you will be supported by staff from the Rik Basra Leukaemia Campaign.

We have three types of volunteer positions available so please read through the role descriptions below and decide which would most suit you. We cannot guarantee that you will definitely be matched with the role that you choose but we will endeavour to do so. We need volunteers to help us between 8.30am and 4.30pm. Various shifts are available. If you work for the full day, you will receive a £5 lunch voucher to use on the University campus.

Job 1 - Meet and Greet

You will encourage passers-by to engage with the recruitment drive and welcome potential donors. You will check eligibility criteria and educate potential donors to ensure they are making an informed choice about joining the register before guiding them towards the form-filling team.

  • Skills required: Confident, friendly manner and the ability to chat to anyone.

Job 2 - Swab Flagging and Form Filling

You will label the swabs, direct applicants to correctly take their swabs and help fill in the Anthony Nolan registration form accurately. You will answer any queries they may have about the process.

  • Skills required: Meticulous eye for detail and a friendly personality.

Job 3 - Swab Processing

Once the potential donor's registration form has been checked, you will be responsible for checking that the swabs received belong to the applicant, and that they are packed and labelled correctly. You will barcode and collate the completed registration forms and swab samples. You will also thank the potential donor for joining the register and advise them of the next steps.

  • Skills required: Patient, calm manner and a meticulous eye for detail.
