Leicester Heroes Day

Help us become the Stem Cell Capital of the UK

So, what's it all about?

Every 20 minutes, someone is diagnosed with blood cancer but only half of these people will find a stem cell donor match, the other half will die.

On Monday 30 October 2017, in collaboration with The Rik Basra Leukaemia Campaign and Leicester Marrow, we are striving to smash the UK record number of sign-ups in a day to the Anthony Nolan Stem Cell Donor Register and we need your help.

How can you take part?

  • Join the Stem Cell Register

If you're between the ages of 16-30 you will have the chance to join the Anthony Nolan Stem Cell Register, help beat Leukaemia and become one of our Leicester Heroes.

It takes less than 10 minutes to join the register.  There's no procedure involved, just a form to fill out and a completely pain-free swab from inside your mouth.

  • Volunteer at our events

You can also help by signing-up to volunteer at one of our events.  We are looking for staff from ALL parts of the university to help us, either at one of our College events, or at our central recruitment station in the marquee.

  • Join Leicester Marrow

If you're a University of Leicester student who is interested in informing other students about the importance of Anthony Nolan's work, then join Leicester Marrow. The student group will give you training on the processes involved with signing up to the Anthony Nolan Stem Cell Register and they will offer you opportunities to volunteer at and run recruitment events. Not only do they save lives, they also have fun!

Why are we doing this?

  • We want to give you the chance to become a hero and save a life
  • We were moved by Rik Basra's story here in Leicester.  Find out more about Rik's story
  • We want to spread the message that donating stem cells is a simple process and much like giving blood; it's time to silence the myths and fear

Where and when is it taking place?

Come and find us in the marquee in the centre of University campus on Monday 30 October 2017. You can't miss us!

We're also delighted to be teaming up with the following local Colleges on the following dates:

  • Regent College, Leicester - Wednesday 11 October
  • Robert Smyth Academy, Market Harborough- Thursday 12 October
  • Beauchamp College, Leicester - Tuesday 24 October
  • Gateway College, Hamilton - Wednesday 25 October
  • Wyggeston & Queen Elizabeth 1 College - Thursday 26 October

What if I become a stem cell donor match in the future?

If you’re a match, Anthony Nolan will contact you. 9 out of 10 people can donate their stem cells via blood, in a straightforward process called peripheral blood stem cell collection.

You’ll receive a series of four hormone injections over four days (at home usually)to make your stem cells multiply into the bloodstream. Then you’ll head to a clinic where a nurse or doctor will insert a tiny tube in your arm, draw out the blood, and pass it through a machine to collect the stem cells. Yep, it’s that simple.
Donating only takes about 4-5 hours and that’s it. Some people report flu-like symptoms from the hormone injections, but these are usually mild and vanish within a few days. All your travel expenses are covered too so you don’t have to worry about cost.
