A project to install 3 flues outside the 18 storey Attenborough Tower
Attenborough Flues Project

The Attenborough Flues

The first two floors of the 18 storey Attenborough Tower house large boilers in the plant room; the flues (chimneys) for these boilers were constructed through the centre of the building, completed in 1970.   After more than 40 years of service the internal walls of these very tall chimneys collapsed in on themselves and it was not possible to repair them without significant major impact on the building users and nearly prohibitive costs.  The University needed to bring the still fully functioning boilers back into use and satisfy its obligations to the District Heating Scheme and an external solution was found.  To avoid disruption, the majority of the works were completed outside normal working hours, but the project was still completed well within the allotted timescales.
