About the Project

About the project to transform the former Fielding Johnson Car Park into a public space for students and staff

What are we doing?

Creating a magnificent multi-use outdoor venue in the heart of the campus with the ability to easily erect marquees and hold a wide variety of events showcasing some of the very best of Leicester.

Why are we doing it?

A trial closure of the Fielding Johnson car park was conducted to assess the impact on staff and visitors wishing to park.  During the trial period a number of events were held on the space, including Freshers’ Week activities, the festival of careers and the Christmas Market.  These have shown the potential for the transformation of the area to hold bigger and better events and activities.

Not only this, but the transformed square will link a number of buildings and spaces at the heart of campus, and provide a much improved shared area for socialising, relaxing and studying.

When will the works take place?

Works to erect the hoardings and close out the space will start on Monday 9 May 2016.  The works to landscape the area  will start after the examination period has completed, Monday 6 June 2016 and are scheduled to complete before the start of the Autumn Term 2016.

How will the works affect me?

There will be no noisy works during the exam period, and while there may be some short-term disruption, the end result will be a beautiful new square at the centre of campus which will provide an immediate improvement to both staff and student experience.
