Heroic contractors saved the newts from the asbestos

Contractors removing asbestos from a boiler house at Oadby got a slimy surprise when they found a family of newts hibernating in there.
Fortunately they knew that Great Crested Newts (GCN) and their habitats are protected under UK law and need to be properly handled so all worked was halted until the newts were identified.
Ecological consultants identified the amphibians as smooth newts (the common variety, not GCN) and released them back into the Botanic Gardens before work recommenced.
If you find any newts on University grounds please report them to environment@le.ac.uk so they can be properly protected. You need a licence to handle GCN so please don’t attempt to move them!
