Its Go Green Week next week! Join students and staff across the University at a range of exciting student-led events to help all of us go green together and achieve a more sustainable University. All students and staff welcome.

At every event you will have the chance to make a pledge to make a small change in your life at University. And you could win luxury hamper basket of zero-waste goodies! Enter in person or online here.

Meat-free Monday 13th Feb

The Great Carbon Game
Ever wondered what impact your dietary choices have on the planet? Now you can find out! 11am-3pm, Students Union Square

Veggie Information Stand
Not sure why so many people are going meat-free? Got an opinion about it? Have a casual chat with VegSoc, who can speak from experience about the advantages of reducing your meat intake. 10-4pm, Stall in the Students Union

Get paid to choose a meat-free lunch
Buy a meat-free lunch on campus on Mondays, and earn 10% of your food cost in loyalty points on your U-pay Chili card—to spend another time! Every Monday of the year. All food outlets on campus

Film Night—Cowspiracy
Come along for a groundbreaking feature-length documentary following the intrepid filmmaker Kip Andersen as he uncovers the most destructive industry facing the planet today – and investigates why the world’s leading environmental organizations are too afraid to talk about it. 4.30-6pm, Training Room, lower ground floor, Students’ Union

 

Valentine's Tuesday 14th February

FREE Hot Drinks—our gift to you
All students are staff are welcome to receive a free hot drink in the Fielding Johnson Square. Teas, coffee and hot chocolate. Bring your own mug or coffee flask, or walk away with your own free Go Green Week mug. Did you hear, ‘paper’ coffee cups aren’t actually recyclable? 3 billion go to landfill every year. We want to know your opinion about coffee cups. What would you want to see in an ideal world? What would make you bring in a reusable coffee cup? 11am-3pm, Fielding Johnson Square

Environmental Action Society’s showing of Planet Earth will blow your mind and remind us all, we’ve only got 1 planet, so lets look after it. So bring your date, your mate or just yourself, get free pizza, popcorn and get informed! 7-9pm, Attenborough Room 212

 

Waste-not Wednesday 15th February

Find out about UoL UniRes— the Facebook group for UoL students
Grab a bag of free popcorn and check out Uni-Res a new facebook group specifically for sharing, selling and swapping your unwanted items. Whether course books, clothes, kitchen items, posters or that stray cat you found, find bargains and put your unwanted items to good use! 1-5pm, stall outside Queen’s Hall, Students’ Union

How to live a Zero-Waste lifestyle: green alternatives
Ever wondered how it is possible to live without producing any waste? It’s a lot easier than you think! Visit the stall to check out some alternatives currently on the market— and which may save you some £££ too! 11-3pm, Stall in Queen’s Hall foyer, Students’ Union

Make your own Morsbag Workshop
Learn how to use a sewing machine and make your own reusable shopping bag from old materials, all provided or you can bring your own. This is a volunteering HEAR accredited activity. 1-4pm, Dance Studio, Students’ Union

What happens to your waste?
See for yourself from our contractors where all waste from UoL ends up, how it is treated, and how much of your tuition fees are spent on waste! Guess how much waste is in the container for Wastecycle freebies. 11-3pm, Mayor’s Walk, outside the SU

The Green Roof Project Info Stall
Find out about the upcoming green roofs planned for the Physics Building and share your own ideas for which plants should be included. 11-2pm, stall in Queen’s Hall foyer, Students’ Union

Hungry for Change Plot Session
Join Hungry for Change society down at the Brookfield plot to grow fruit and veggies and take the harvest home for free! This is a volunteering HEAR accredited activity. 12-4pm, Brookfield, 266 London Road, Leicester, LE2 1RQ

Get your very own strawberry plant from Hungry for Change. Also have a chat with them if you would like to get involved in their awesome food-growing project. 10am-3pm Stall in the Students Union

Dealing with the modern flood threat: a historical perspective. A lecture by Dr. Richard Jones.
Could UK place-names hold the solutions to dealing with today’s flood threats? Find out how Anglo-Saxon place-names, coined during the last major episode of rapid global warming, suggest how water behaves in today’s world and how we can adapt to climate change. 4-5.30pm, Bennett Lecture Theatre 10.
