Mission Pond Impossible
This week, Leicester City Council ran a Victoria Park pond clearance session for our volunteers to begin the eradication of Myriophyllum aquaticum - more commonly known as Parrot's Feather. This invasive species is native to Central and South America and is usually found in fast flowing water, elsewhere the species can cause flooding and damage to
drainage channels.
It is listed under Schedule 9 to the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 in the UK and it is an offence to plant or allow this plant to grow in the wild.
So you can see we have a problem on our hands...
This week's session cleared a lot of the pond coverage, but a lot of the species still remain, and it will take many returning visits to nip this at the bud.
Fortunately the Leicester City Council are not going to give up on the pond and neither are we - we plan to hold further clearance days at least every 6 weeks during this growing period. Check out the Leicester City Council's volunteering bulletin should you wish to join us!
