Global Climate Strike Day

Join us to raise awareness about climate change and support local action

Global Climate Strike BannerThe Global Climate Strikes, initiated by Swedish student Greta Thunberg, and the national strikes by school students in the UK are helping to make real change in this world by holding politicians to account for their lack of action on what is being called the climate crisis.

To raise awareness and show our support, the University is supporting a 30 minute stoppage between 12-12.30pm. Subject to essential services being maintained, staff are welcome to “strike” for 30 minutes at the allotted time.

During this time, we encourage you to join us on Friday 20th September for a range of activities to raise awareness about climate change and support local action. We have been working with De Montfort University, as part of the RCE-EM, to offer a number of activities that staff and students can take part in and make a positive contribution to the environment. There is a city-wide event being held at the Clock Tower in Leicester City Centre at midday on the 20 September which is being supported by Leicester City Council.

Come and join us on Centenary Square between 10am and 3pm for a range of activities:

  • A Sustainable Development Goals stall with interactive activities
  • Create your own floral headdress with our Gardens Team
  • Drop off your crisp packet and pen recycling collection and donate any of your unwanted stationery
  • Test your knowledge with the How Bad are Bananas? game (in Charles Wilson if poor weather)

Other activities are also going on around our campuses, or even from your own desk!

  • Come, relax and do a spot of gardening and harvesting at our Hungry for Change allotment session from 12-3pm at Brookfield
  • Join in with the Leicester Innovation Hub's Food Security & Resilience Copernicus Hackathon - for more information or to sign up, visit the Eventbrite page
  • You can join in with the conversation from your own desk with our online webinar, Sustainability at Leicester. Find out what is going on in the University about sustainability and climate change - sign up here! To view the webinar, please join using this Zoom link -
