Disability

Relatively recently in the UK we decided that within our society people who have a disability should be given assistance so that the detrimental impact of their impairment would be reduced or, if possible, taken away.  The aim being to achieve a level playing field for disabled people compared with other able-bodied unimpaired individuals and thereby equality of opportunity for disabled people.

Definition of Disability

In the Act, a person has a disability if:

Guidance on matters to be taken into account in determining questions relating to the definition of disability

Reasonable Adjustments:

To achieve this level playing field the concept of reasonable adjustment has been established. Here is more information about reasonable adjustment in terms of Education & Employment.

If you are a disabled student or you need advice on how to support a disabled student help is at hand through the University’s   AccessAbility Service.

Support for reasonable adjustments if you are an employee is provided through the Access to Work scheme.

A vitally important aspect of providing a reasonable adjustment is that the dignity of individuals is paramount. This point is relevant to all of us whatever our role.  Disabled people do not want favours and do not want to stand out as special cases. They simply want the same level of opportunity to achieve and to live.

Disabled Car Parking Spaces around Central Campus:

On 19th/20th March 2016, several new disabled parking bays will be marked out around Central Campus, where possible they will have the hatched yellow zone to enable wide door opening or will be located where there are no cars blocking access.  Existing bays will be relined if the markings are not clear.

There will be bays as follows:

  • 6 bays around the base of Attenborough Tower/College House.
  • 1 bay by R Engineering Design Block.
  • 5 behind Bennett which also service those working in MSB.
  • 1 in the MSB Car Park
  • 5 around Charles Wilson
  • 2 by Computer Centre
  • 4 at the Sport Centre
  • 6 at the Centre for Medicine that are also available for Attenborough Arts events.
