Sexual Orientation

We require information relating to sexual orientation so that we are able to accurately identify the makeup of our workforce and incorporate this data into standard reporting such as recruitment and internal processes such as merit awards and training and development, to determine whether there are any differential impacts on people from different religious groups.

As well as a requirement to provide equalities monitoring data to the Higher Education Statistics Agency, under the Equality Act 2010 we are also legally required to produce and publish equalities monitoring information annually. This data will only be used anonymously and to make high level analysis.

The Sexual Orientation categories are as follows:

  • Bisexual
  • Gay Man
  • Gay Women/Lesbian
  • Heterosexual/Straight
  • Other
  • Prefer Not to Say

As a Stonewall Diversity Champion, we would also like to pro-actively advance lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) equalities across the University, through raising the profile of LGBT issues. We have already started to do this by creating a staff LGBT+ equality forum.


In a comprehensive survey undertaken by YouGov in 2012, it was found that one in five (19%) lesbian, gay and bisexual employees have experienced verbal bullying from colleagues, customers or service users because of their sexual orientation in the last five years. More than half have been bullied by people in their own team.  We would like to know more about the experiences of LGBT people at Leicester so that we are better able to design services, supply appropriate training or target supportive publicity etc. in order to improve the experience of LGBT people.
