Religion & Belief

We require information relating to belief so that we are able to accurately identify the makeup of our workforce and incorporate this data into standard reporting such as recruitment and internal processes such as merit awards and training and development, to determine whether there are any differential impacts on people from different religious groups.

As well as a requirement to provide equalities monitoring data to the Higher Education Statistics Agency, under the Equality Act 2010 we are also legally required to produce and publish equalities monitoring information annually. This data will only be used anonymously and to make high level analysis.

You can update your record through the Employee Self Service facility. The Religion and/or Belief categories are as follows:

We would also like to pro-actively advance equalities for people from different faith groups across the University, through raising awareness of faith related issues and identifying areas of concerns. We have already started to do this by supporting a Multi-Faith forum.


Through the use of equalities monitoring data relating to religion/belief, it has been identified that a disproportionate number of employees who have initiated a grievance have disclosed their religious belief as being Sikh. This highlights a potential issue relating to this group, and provides sufficient evidence to undertake specific consultation with Sikh employees. It is revealed that the Sikh employees involved in grievances are from two service areas and a common theme is verbal harassment from some colleagues. Once this is been ascertained interventions such as workshops and training can be delivered to address issues within the service areas. If we did not capture data on religious belief we would not be able to determine whether processes such as grievances are related to or are a result of religious harassment or unfair treatment due to someone’s religious belief.
