Equalities Monitoring

In relation to the Equality Monitoring Categories we have provided explanations for each category, why the data is required and what it will be used for.  We hope this will make it clearer for you to understand when completing the Equalities Monitoring section on the Employee Self Service system.

We are committed to ensuring that you are treated fairly and that we do not inadvertently make decisions or have processes that treat you less well on the basis of your age, race, gender or disability, among other things.  The University collects Equalities data from all stakeholders, including job applicants, employees and students.  People sometimes find it difficult to understand why we collect such information and some feel it is an intrusion on their privacy.  We can understand such discomfort or puzzlement so we will take this opportunity to explain why it is very important that we have complete and accurate information. Collating Equalities data enables us to monitor processes and to identify trends or issues and put in place measures to address these with the aim of ensuring equality of opportunity.  For example, do people with a disability have about the same level of success in recruitment as non-disabled people?  Do men and women or older and younger employees have roughly the same chance of getting promoted?  Do all employees access opportunities to training and development equally? Are employees from a Black or Minority Ethnic Background less likely to be promoted? Completing and updating your equalities data enables us to use this statistical information to better answer such questions and allows us to take a pro-active in developing transparent and accessible processes and practices for all.

Your equality information will never be used publicly other than as part of a statistic.  Your personal information will remain confidential.  It will be stored and used in accordance with The Data Protection Act 1998.

As well as being legally obliged to gather such data, we are also required to make an anonymous statistical return to the national body responsible for funding us and other Universities.

Finally, through the operation of our Equality and Diversity Strategy, we publish our equality statistics on the Equalities website annually.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Equalities Team.

Prefer not to Say: For each category respondees have the option to 'prefer not to say' if they do not wish to disclose their equalities related information.
