English - the original journal of the English Association - has been published since 1936. From 2008 the journal is published for the Association by Oxford University Press. In 2009 the journal increased to 4 issues per year and subscription now includes access to the electronic archive back to 1996. Access to the electronic archive prior to 1996 is also available for purchase/subscription.

English provides a forum for people who think hard and passionately about literature and who want to communicate those thoughts to a wide audience. It includes scholarly essays and reviews on all periods of literary history alongside new work by contemporary poets.

The journal is edited by a team from the University of East Anglia.

Call for Editorial Board members - English Journal

English is looking for ten new members to join the journal's editorial board. Board members will be expected to peer-review submissions in their subject area, and also to promote the journal more broadly within that area. We encourage expressions of interest from colleagues across the discipline, but have particular vacancies in the following subject areas:

  • Medieval Writing
  • Early Modern Writing
  • The Writing of Empire and Colonisation
  • Decolonial, Postcolonial, Indigenous, and Diasporic Writing
  • Non-standard Englishes

While Editorial Board positions are traditionally held by collegues with seniority, we recognise that such work can contribute to the career progression of more junior colleagues, and so we aim to appoint to the Board from different career stages. English, as the academic journal of the English Association, aims to speak both to, and for, the discipline of English studies, and we want to ensure that the make-up of the Editorial Board is representative of the diversity of expertise, background, and experience within the discipline today.

For expressions of interest, please email the journal address: english.journaloftheea@gmail.com, including brief cover letter and CV with relevant experience and publication activity. We are happy to reply to enquiries. Closing date for expressions of interest: 15 March 2021.

The English Postgraduate Essay Prize

The editors of English: the Journal of the English Association were very pleased to initiate in 2017 the opening of an annual essay competition exclusive to postgraduates. The competition provides an ideal opportunity for students to enhance their CV through the publication of their work in an excellent high-profile journal that caters to a very wide range of genres, periods, and critical approaches. We are looking for essays that provide new perspectives on canonical and/or non-canonical Anglophone literatures, and therefore welcome submissions that focus on single authors/texts or a range, and which develop original arguments beyond simple close reading, while engaging with recent scholarship in relevant fields.
