The 2016 competition is based on a passage taken from Great Expectations

DickensThe competition is open to UK students aged between 14 and 16, or students abroad who are taking UK examinations (GCSE or IGCSE).

First Prize £150

Two runners-up £50 each

How to enter

Read the extract and relevant notes below.

Extract: Great Expectations

Now complete both Task One and Task Two

Task One

Explain carefully how Dickens's writing vividly conveys:

  • the mood of his room;
  • his character;
  • what he does for a living.

Task Two

Write your own description of a room which creates a mood and gives clues as to what its occupant is like.

Entry Requirements

Word limit: 700-750 words per task.

Entries should preferably be typed, with the student's name, school address and email address clearly indicated.

Each entry should be accompanied by a certificate of authentication signed by a teacher to indicate that it is the student's original unaided work. Certificates are available from the English Association office or click here to download a copy Certificate of authentication.

The closing date for entries is 31st May 2016.

The prize was launched at the British Library in London on 22nd November, 2010 at the 'Hard Expectations or Great Times: Making Sense of Dickens Today' conference, sponsored by the British Library, the Charles Dickens Museum and the English Association.
