The Higher Education Committee is delighted to welcome five new members from March 2020.

Katherine Baxter is associate professor at Northumbria University, with expertise in modern literature, postcolonial, and cross-cultural scholarship. For several years she has been the General Editor of English: The Journal of the English Association.

Katherine Heavey is lecturer in early modern English literature at Glasgow University. She has a particular interest in the way we share our research with schools.

Andrea Macrae is principal lecturer in student experience and stylistics at Oxford Brooke's University. She co-organised the highly successful Shared Futures Action on Employability event for EA and UE at Northumbria University in September 2019. This is an area where she has particular expertise. She is also working on a book on the language of charity fundraising communications.

Anshuman Mondal is professor of modern literature at the University of East Anglia, and the current chair of the Postcolonial Studies Association.

Alex Thomson is the (outgoing) chair of University English, in which role he has been a fantastic supporter of the discipline nationally, working alongside the EA on many green/white paper consultations. His research area is modern and contemporary literature and philosophy, and he is the current Head of English Literature at Edinburgh University.

Chaired by Professor Jenny Richards (Newcastle University), the HEC provides a voice for HE English in dialogue with other elements of the education sector, with government and public bodies, and with the wider public. It engages proactively with the broad range of issues affecting researchers and teachers in English literature, language and creative writing across the HE sector in the UK. It provides a forum for debate about matters where opinion is often divided across the community, and seeks consensus where possible.
