A programme of interactive seminar-style sessions, designed to enrich and deepen understanding of the social, historical and theatrical contexts that shaped Shakespeare's writing in The Tempest and Measure for Measure.

The day is designed to suit the needs of students working towards examinations and will address the following assessment objectives:

  • helping students appreciate the relation of their play to Shakespeare’s other work and to the theatre of his day;
  • the influence upon texts of cultural, historical and other contexts;
  • different critical interpretations and the importance of context;
  • the contribution of directors, designers and performers to the theatrical experience;
  • how characters and ideas are conveyed through theatrical presentation.
