Our response to the proposed cuts to English at Leicester

As a subject association and learned society, The English Association has enjoyed a long and happy relationship with our host and landlord, the University of Leicester. We were, however, disappointed to hear of the proposed closure of English language and medieval literature studies at the University.

As part of the pre-change process in the autumn of last year, we were contacted by the University and invited to comment on the proposed cuts to the School of English. This we did in the form of a robust and detailed letter drafted by the EA Higher Education Committee under the guidance of its chair, Professor Jennifer Richards. The letter was co-signed by our partner organisations University English and the Institute of English Studies.

Now that the details of the proposed cuts to English at Leicester have become clearer, we shall continue to press our case through a process of constructive engagement during the formal consultation phase.
