The English Association Shakespeare Study Day for A-Level Teachers
The English Association is delighted to announce that booking for the Shakespeare Teachers Conference is now open. This conference will offer new and refreshing ways of teaching Shakespeare at A-Level and is intended to facilitate discussion among experienced teachers as well as offering valuable resources for teachers beginning their sixth-form teaching.
Panelists
Discussions will be led by Pamela Bickley and Jenny Stevens, co-authors of Essential Shakespeare: The Arden Guide to Text and Interpretation and Shakespeare and Early Modern Drama: Text and Performance, and Sean McEvoy, author of Shakespeare: The Basics, Tragedy: The Basics, Hamlet: A Sourcebook. All three have considerable experience of teaching and publishing on Shakespeare.
Programme for the day
- Genre: brief presentations on the distinctive characteristics of Shakespearean tragedy and comedy followed by questions and discussion.
- Coffee break.
- Using Adaptations and Appropriations of Shakespeare as a way into exploring interpretation (AO5). An overview of the topic will be followed by breakout sessions covering King Lear, Othello and Hamlet.
- Lunch (a sandwich and fruit lunch will be provided).
- Practical ways of approaching close reading: using drama in the classroom; encouraging students to read aloud. To be followed by breakout discussions sharing ideas of good practice.
- Plenary discussion; final thoughts
This conference will hold on 29 June, 2019 at Senate House University of London, Malet St, London WC1E 7HU. Registration starts at 10:00AM and conference will end at 3.30PM. Cost: £20 – EA members
