Academics in the Classroom: English Language and Literature Outreach - Call for Participants

Applications are now open for ‘Academics in the Classroom’, a two-day workshop for teachers and early career academics funded by the British Academy. The workshop will take place at Hertford College, Oxford on Monday 15 and Tuesday 16 August 2016.

This event will provide training, networking, and a space for discussion and reflection for teachers and early career academics interested in how universities can deliver research-led English language and literature outreach work. ECAs and current teachers of Key Stage 4 and 5 English will work collaboratively at an intensive two-day workshop structured around a series of talks, reflective roundtable discussions, and forums.

Topics covered will include the successes and limitations of current outreach work; the new GCSE and A level curricula; pedagogical best practice in schools and universities; bridging the gap between school and university; what is impact; working with external organisations; digital outreach; and the future of outreach work in English.

Adrian Barlow, President of the English Association, is a confirmed keynote speaker.

ECA participants will gain the tools, network, and confidence to adapt their research for younger audiences in appropriate and useful ways. It is expected that after the workshop, they will return to their universities and set up outreach schemes of their own, potentially (but not exclusively) with teachers and external organisations met through the project. They are also encouraged to share what they have learned with their colleagues and peers by offering training or forming networks.

Teacher participants will learn more about how English is currently taught at degree level and how universities can support school students through outreach work and curriculum enrichment. The workshop will offer teachers the chance to meet academics from a range of universities, as well as representatives from external organisations, and to form networks that will allow for future collaboration. The resulting outreach work will give school students the chance to be inspired and challenged by working with active researchers.

The workshop is free of charge for all participants, including meals and accommodation. There is also a generous fund available to cover participants’ travel expenses.
