English for Medics International Summer Programme
The English for Medics International Summer Programme is ideal for medical students and health professionals who want to improve their English for use in a hospital or medical setting. The course has now been running for ten years and was initially devised with the support of a University of Leicester alumnus who is now a doctor in Japan.
Aims of the English for Medics International Summer Programme
The main aims of the course are to develop participants’ ability to communicate when using English for medical purposes and to provide them with opportunities to find out about the health system and medical practice in the UK. We focus on all four language skills – speaking, listening, reading and writing but the main emphasis will be on improving spoken English. An important aspect of the course is to learn to communicate in an appropriate way. When health professionals communicate with patients, they are expected to have a good ‘bedside manner’.

This programme is suitable for medical students who would like to go and work in a foreign hospital or join a study abroad programme with clinical training. This programme could add extra points onto your CV when you actually apply for a study abroad scholarship or a job overseas. Through this programme, I have improved my English proficiency level as well as gained medical knowledge in the UK. This is the programme which made me even more motivated to learn more in order to meet my targets. I have also met many medical students from different medical universities. We studied and laughed together, which was an unforgettable experience.
4th year medical student |
It was great to study medical English, but for me, outside class activities and the social life were absolutely irreplaceable. I have met other medical students and with them, we talked endlessly about our dreams and ambitions and shared anxiety about the future and our studies. Without this programme, I’d not have met them, so I really appreciate the programme.
