English for Medics International Summer Programme

The English for Medics International Summer Programme is ideal for medical students and health professionals who want to improve their English for use in a hospital or medical setting. The course has now been running for ten years and was initially devised with the support of a University of Leicester alumnus who is now a doctor in Japan.

Aims of the English for Medics International Summer Programme

The main aims of the course are to develop participants’ ability to communicate when using English for medical purposes and to provide them with opportunities to find out about the health system and medical practice in the UK. We focus on all four language skills – speaking, listening, reading and writing but the main emphasis will be on improving spoken English. An important aspect of the course is to learn to communicate in an appropriate way. When health professionals communicate with patients, they are expected to have a good ‘bedside manner’.

Course description

This intensive course primarily focuses on language used in medical contexts. Participants will be provided with opportunities to use new medical vocabulary and structures in different contexts such as with a patient or consulting with fellow health professionals. Areas covered during the course include:

• The UK health system
• Health issues in the UK
• Taking a patient history
• Giving a physical examination
• Diagnostic and treatment procedures
• Development of research and presentation skills
• Cultural and social aspects of English usage
• Visits to medical services in the Leicester area

This programme is suitable for medical students who would like to go and work in a foreign hospital or join a study abroad programme with clinical training. Key facts

Dates

The summer school will take place between Monday 5^th August and Friday 23rd August 2019.
Accommodation will be available from Sunday 4^th August to Saturday 24^th August 2019 inclusive.
Applications close at the end of June 2019.

Entry requirements

Participants are expected to have a minimum English level of IELTS 4.5 or equivalent. Alternative English qualifications will be accepted or we may be able to test your English. Please email us at eltu@le.ac.uk if you have any questions.

Participants must be aged 18 or over.

Accommodation

Accommodation will be in self-catered accommodation within walking distance of the campus and the city centre.

Participants will be housed in a single study bedroom with a private bathroom and will share kitchen facilities. All bills and Wi-Fi access are included.

Cost

£1,950 per person.

£1,800 for participants from University of Leicester partner institutions.

£1,800 for participants referred by a previous International Summer Programme student.

£1,800 for participants referred by a current University of Leicester student or member of staff.

Payment is required in full to accept a place on the course.

What's included:

• A minimum of 20 hours of tuition per week for three weeks
• Self-catered ensuite accommodation
• All excursions and social events

• A certificate of attendance
• Access to University of Leicester facilities

What's not included:

• Airport transfers
• Meals, other than those specified in the timetable
• Visa costs
• Medical and travel insurance
