Why Counselling?

Counselling offers you the opportunity to talk in confidence with someone who is impartial.

Many people resolve their problems by talking to friends, family or perhaps someone in their department. Others find looking on-line for information about their concerns helpful and we have a large selection of self-help information available. However, there are also times when you need more than this, to talk to someone from outside your day to day life, and this is when the Counselling Service may be helpful. Counselling can help you to focus on and understand more clearly issues which concern you, and make choices or changes which are right for you. This is effective for help with a wide range of personal, developmental and academic problems.

What we offer

We mainly offer short-term counselling that encourages people to make the most of each session.  Each session usually lasts for 50 minutes. This is an active, collaborative process with follow-ups or on-going sessions scheduled at weekly, fortnightly or longer intervals.

Making an appointment

To self-refer into the service, please complete our on-line registration form .

Once received, your form will be processed within 48 hours at which point you will be invited to book in to a 30 minute assessment appointment to see a member of the Counselling & Wellbeing Team.  During the assessment we will work with you to identify the most appropriate support including group sessions, face to face sessions or signposting to specialist resources or external services.

We are not an emergency service (please see Other Sources of Supportand aim to provide an assessment appointment as soon as we can although at peak times it is likely the wait will be longer.

Our expectations from you

Please make sure you arrive on time for your appointment.

If you need to cancel or rearrange your session, please contact us as soon as possible and ideally, no later than 24 hours before your appointment. You can do this by emailing wellbeing@le.ac.uk.

If you miss your initial assessment and we have not received a cancellation notification, we will then email you to follow up and you will then need to re-register with the service for another appointment.

Liaison with academic staff

If we have your consent and it is appropriate, we can liaise with your tutor or a relevant person within the University.

Mitigating circumstances

You may request supportive evidence from the service in relation to missed deadlines, exam difficulties, prolonged absences or other difficulties in meeting the requirements of the course. The Student Counselling and Wellbeing service can provide a letter of support, if you have had contact with the service.

The service cannot advise on the mitigating circumstances process. If you require advice on this, you can contact your personal tutor, academic department, SU Advice Service or the Welfare Service.
