What are Transferable Skills?

The Career Development Service has worked with leading graduate recruiters to create the Leicester Transferable Skills Framework. Whether you are applying for a role at a small independent organisation, a top 100 graduate recruiter, or for further study; your experience in applying these types of skills will be assessed.

How to use the framework:

  1. Develop these skills through your course, or in activities outside your course
  2. Regularly cross-check your skill development against the skills in the framework and use this to inform what experience you seek next
  3. When you are applying for a job you will need to ‘discuss’ how you have applied skills effectively through different experiences (using the STARS technique). The framework defines the types of ‘evidence’ that employers will look for in relation to a specific skill and so can help you with how you present your experience to employers

Our Career Consultants are experts in understanding how graduate recruiters assess for skills, so make use of their expertise:

  • We can help you identify your strengths, or areas you need to develop
  • We can suggest opportunities to develop specific skills
  • We can help you explain your experience in the way that will appeal to employers
