Widening access to postgraduate study

We're offering 25 scholarships worth £3,000 each for home and EU students starting a taught postgraduate course in 2019.

These scholarships are aimed at widening access to further study by removing barriers to postgraduate education for students from underrepresented groups, so applicants need to meet certain criteria in order to apply.

You can apply for a scholarship if you meet the following four criteria:

  • You’re a University of Leicester undergraduate student graduating in July 2019
  • You're domiciled in the UK or European Union and are not charged international rate fees
  • You’ll be studying a taught postgraduate course full-time or part-time for a maximum of two years
  • You meet the entry requirements for a taught postgraduate course at the University of Leicester in any subject.

Plus one or more of the following:

  • You have been in care as a looked-after child for at least 13 weeks since the age of 14
  • You have a disability
  • You are a carer for an ill or disabled family member
  • You are from a black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) background
  • You were aged 21 or over at the start of your undergraduate degree course
  • Live in a neighbourhood with low young participation in higher education within the United Kingdom - your postcode must be in quintile 1 or 2 in POLAR3 young participation (check your postcode on the Office for Students website)*.

*The postcode criteria is based upon a student’s permanent home address upon entry to the University – so please enter the postcode of your permanent home address when you applied to Leicester for your undergraduate degree.

Application process:

To apply, please download and complete the scholarship application form.

If you haven’t already done so, you must apply for a Postgraduate Masters course, which you can do at the university website, https://le.ac.uk/courses . You must do this by 5pm on Friday 30th August to be considered for a Widening Access to Postgraduate Study Scholarship.

If your Postgraduate Masters application is successful, the Admissions Office will send you a conditional degree offer. If you wish, you can accept this offer without commitment and before you receive your scholarship notification.

The Career Development Service will notify you of the outcome of your scholarship application by 5pm on Friday 6th September.

Additional notes:

This is a competitive bursary scheme, and eligibility does not guarantee an award.
