The experience required varies across our roles, but most of our student-friendly roles require little to no previous experience!

Opportunities to get involved in during coronavirus

At the moment, we’re focusing on ways in which you can get involved in a variety of activities during the coronavirus pandemic.  Please see details below of opportunities available to gain experience and develop new skills – some can even be done from the comfort of your own home.

Summer job opportunities

UniGrow

Opportunity details:

UniGrow is a small scale pilot project looking to recruit 20-50 university students or graduates to work on farms over the summer to pick fruit/vegetables.

There is no other unskilled, temporary job that pays this well (even in years when holiday work is plentiful). Fruit and veg pickers typically earn £400 to £500 a week – and the best even more. For the first fortnight or so, you’ll be given full training (at the basic minimum wage)

  • helping harvest locally grown produce to feed the nation
  • re-engage students and farmers with the mutual benefit that they can bring each other

Shout

Opportunity details:

Looking for a way to make a difference during the lockdown, whilst developing your communication, problem solving and time management skills? Crisis text line ‘Shout’ are looking for volunteers.

This is a volunteering opportunity that can be done from home, with a commitment of 2-4 hours per week. There is 25 hours online training, and then it is expected that volunteers will commit a total of 200 hours of volunteering.

  • ability to develop many transferable skills, particularly communication

FutureLearn

Opportunity details:

Oxford Home Study Centre

Opportunity details:

Oxford Home Study Centre offers free short online learning courses in a variety of subjects. These courses will help students develop knowledge in an area of interest, which may be related to a career they wish to pursue. Studying additionally will help to develop time management and learning skills.

Courses available include Business Management, HR Management, Accountancy and Bookkeeping, Risk Management, Diet and Nutrition, Interior Design and many, many more!

Amnesty International Human Rights Academy

Opportunity details:

‘Training a new generation of human rights defenders – strengthening the human rights movement through action oriented education’

The Amnesty International Human Rights Academy offers loads of educational materials on human rights to choose and learn from. This includes introductory courses on the core concepts of human rights and specific courses on a topic of interest.

Learn a new language with Duolingo

Opportunity details:

Website Duolingo offers free daily learning of a new language, at your own pace. Being able to speak multiple languages is a great addition to a CV to make you become more employable, and will also give you a great sense of achievement.

It can be fun learning with duolingo – you can download the app to use on android or Apple phones. Earn points for correct answers, race against the clock, and level up. A great way to learn with friends!

What can I expect to be paid?

The hourly rate for the minimum wage depends on your age. For further information on the National Minimum and Living wage rates visit: https://www.gov.uk/national-minimum-wage-rates

How many hours a week can I work?

This will depend on the level of your study, and if you are on a restricted visa. University of Leicester Senate regulations advise that a student should work no more than 15 hours per week (across any roles worked) You can find further detailed information regarding work restrictions according to level of study at: https://www2.le.ac.uk/offices/sas2/visas-and-immigration/employment/work-restrictions-according-to-level-of-study

Am I entitled to a rest break at work?

Workers have the right to one uninterrupted 20 minute rest break during their working day if they work more than 6 hours per day. For further information on rest breaks please visit: https://www.gov.uk/rest-breaks-work

Am I entitled to holidays/holiday pay?

Almost all workers are legally entitled to 5.6 weeks’ paid holiday a year (known as statutory leave entitlement or annual leave).

This includes:

  • agency workers
  • workers with irregular hours
  • workers on zero-hours contracts
