Deciding my next steps

Decision MakingNow that you’ve reflected on what you’ve learned about yourself and what you’re good at, and understand the routes available to you, you can start thinking about what's best for you.

Remember, you don’t have to decide on an option you’ll do forever; as you develop and things change you may decide on a different career – many people do!

How to choose the best route for you

  • The Prospects Career Planner is a great tool to get you started. After completing some questions about yourself, the planner will provide you with some options based on your skills, motivations and desires. If you’re unsure about your options, or want to explore this further, book a career coaching appointment and we can talk this through with you.
  • The Prospects Job Match tool allows you to answer questions about your skills and interests and receive recommendations on what job would suit you from over 400 job profiles.
  • Prospects also has a section titled 'What can I do with my degree?' which showcases different routes you could take after university, including Further Study options. Explore your career options and see where your degree can take you.
  • You might find it helpful to write a list of the pros and cons for each of the potential choices you have identified – this will help you narrow down your options!
  • Networking with employers is a great way to find out about a career path or sector. Hundreds of employers come to campus every year in our annual Festival of Careers, providing you the opportunity to hear more about their companies and ask questions directly to their recruiters. Many employers specifically target Leicester students, giving you a great opportunity to get ahead. Visit the Events tab on MyCareers and follow us on Twitter for the latest updates.
  • If you’ve completed your Leicester Award Gold, you can also join our Professional Mentoring Programme, giving you the chance to chat directly with an industry professional and gain a valuable insight into your area of interest.

Deciding on your next steps can feel like quite an ambitious target. It can be really helpful to set yourself a SMART career goal, which will help you to break down your long-term goal into smaller, realistic and achievable steps.

Now that you’ve decided the best route for you, the next step is to find suitable jobs and opportunities.
